Social Media: Business vs. Personal - Where do you draw the line?

Is too much really ever too much? Well, drawing a line between personal and business information can be a little tricky, but should you have to? In the world of Social Media, you must be prepared to be transparent and  depending on your comfort level your ability to share information with the general public vs. your personal contacts can vary, but should it? Being transparent is a term used to describe the level of openness to share your personal information with everyone on the internet.

Here is the deal.

  • Fact- people are more likely to respond favorably towards a company that they can relate and connect with
  • Kill two birds with one stone - post up your recent family trip pictures while updating your group about new and upcoming events for your company
  • DO NOT -  post obscene pictures or make offensive comments

If you want to create a Facebook account that would function as both your personal and business account and you are comfortable doing it while following the simple rules, go for it.

For those that are not comfortable mixing personal and business together, that is all right. Don’t shy away from social networking sites because you are afraid to mix the two. Good news, there is another way –

  • Be comfortable - create two separate accounts; one for your business and the other for your personal use
  • Draw the line - add your friends and family to your personal account and post your recent family trip pictures only for their view
  • Be open – allow your business account to be open to the general public by making this account fairly open and letting anyone access, view and comment on the page

The bottom line is that you don’t need to draw a line when it comes to personal and business information. Depending on your comfort level you can combine the two or just keep them separated. But, the most important factor is that you create these accounts. Social networking sites are imperative for helping  your business and  staying connected with people you know.
